Pinon HS Car Warriors

Submitted by Brad Parsons, PHS Automotive Instructor

Three weeks ago, the students at Pinon Unified school district had a competition similar to the “Car Warriors” seen on speed television. Students had two vehicles donated by the High School principal who also donated over $1500.00 is materials and supplies. Students took the vehicles apart and re-furbished them concentrating in four areas; suspension, drivetrain, interior, and exterior. The vehicles were a 1994 Jeep Cherokee and a 1986 Ford Mustang. Late in the second week, the students decided to stop the competition, call it a draw, and concentrate efforts on the Jeep due to a delay in shipment of some of the supplies for the Mustang. The vehicle was delivered on the Friday of the third week which was right on time for the deadline. Mr. Slade Morgan, the principal of the High School, could not believe his eyes at the transformation. The design, and color, was solely student based and the kids really excelled in their creativity.

JTED biotechnology students are working with cutting edge DNA analysis that may lead to treatment and possibly cures for serious illnesses someday.

Steven Uyeda’s students from Sunnyside High School took a recent field trip to collect fruit tree tissue and extract DNA in order to map the trees’ genealogy. The samples will be sent for DNA sequencing to GENEWIZ, a DNA services company. From there, the students develop a database of molecular markers for distinguishing local fruit trees.

This DNA barcoding helps develop an understanding of the connection between evolution and genetic traits, which is useful in the medical, agricultural, and ecological fields.

“Science is becoming increasingly more technological,” said Uyeda. “And today’s high school students can benefit from exposure to the power of technology in addressing complex problems.”

The Kino Trees Heritage Fruit Trees Project, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and the University of Arizona work in collaboration with the students’ project.

For more information, see Kino Heritage Fruit Trees.

ACTEAZ Editorial

By Tony York, ACTEAZ Media Manager

I would like to start by saying that in the last few years that I have worked with ACTEAZ I have come to a greater understanding of what CTE is, the important role it plays in education and the success it can establish in the futures of all CTE students. Career Technical Education is a step beyond what I remember from my own school days. It creates an environment where you can take your knowledge gained from a book, a chalkboard, or a teacher’s lesson plan and have the ability to use it in a hands-on approach using real-world applications. The number of CTE programs across the state and the success stories they are able to share remind me daily why I love working with ACTEAZ and help to support CTE across the state of Arizona.

Today I was able to visit the SkillsUSA state competition, my first of hopefully many CTSO competitions, and was amazed by the energy and pride I was met with by all the students and teachers I was fortunate enough to talk with. The teamwork, professionalism and skills shown in the various events was a fantastic display of how CTE helps our students flourish in their respective fields. The multitude of events from welding, masonry, automotive, robotics, cosmetology, media and broadcasting left me feeling something of a rubberneck as each new section caught my eye.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this being my first major CTSO event to attend, but what I didn’t expect was to leave with a feeling of amazement and inspiration. Seeing firsthand the efforts and results achieved by so many promising students is almost enough to make me wish I was a student again myself. Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s competition. I look forward to sharing the results from here and from the National SkillsUSA Conference in June. As a part of ACTEAZ I am proud of all that CTE has, can and will accomplish in securing a better future for us all. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you all in action again next year!

Lake Havasu High Maintains its ADDA Certification

Submitted by Betsy Parker, WAVE JTED Superintendent.

The Lake Havasu High School Drafting Technology Program is certified by the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA). The American Design Drafting Association is the premier certification organization in the USA and is an international non-profit, professional membership and educational organization born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1948. On their website, they have posted an updated list of certified schools. The last time the list was posted, LHHS was 1 of 2 high schools in Arizona and 1 of 46 high schools in the nation to have their drafting program certified by the ADDA. The new statistics show LHHS as being the only high school in Arizona and 1 of 12 high schools across the nation that is certified.

LHHS continues to turn out certified architectural students which was evident by the 5 students who passed the 400 question test in under 3 hours last year. Currently, Mr. Aranguena’s advanced class is drawing plans for an ADDA competition involving a 3000 sq ft home that must be handicap accessible. The winner of the competition will receive a $100 cash prize along with a $677 voucher to attend the ADDA Annual Technical Conference held in Kansas City, Missouri on April 9-12 with plans being due Dec. 18th. Good luck to the LHHS participants!
